Going to Thailand – off the beaten path places to visit?

Hello! I am going to Thailand for about a week. While I plan on visiting some of the more common tourist attractions, (The Grand Palace, Vimanmek Royal Mansion, What Pho, Wat Arun, etc.) I’m also looking for some of the awesome things that aren’t always listed on the web or in guide books.

What are the must-sees that you don’t always hear about?

ALSO, we’re going to take a bus to another area – one with beautiful beaches. We think we’re going to pick Phuket, but is there maybe another beautiful beach area that is less known?

Thanks!

Visit Wang Suan Pakard Museum(Lettuce Garden Museum) on Rama I road,National/Royal Theater close to the Grand palace,Puppet show(Traditional Thai puppet shows)in Lumpini Night bazaar. I recommend you to try a Gold class movie in The Siam Discovery Center where you can watch movie in a comfortable recliner. It will cost you not more than 600 Thai Bahts. Try out also noodles shops on the street. Or visit the local fresh food market to observe how locals go grocery shopping.
There is a restaurant called Spring Summer where you can eat in a backyard of the restaurant, laying down or do it picnic style-good food good ambiance(highly recommended). There are good local restaurant near wat Pho on the bank of The Chao Praya River facing Temple of Dawn(Wat Arun)where local artists/locals hang out for a cheap drinks and good food. Or you can check out some Hydroponics vegetable restaurants( Bangkok,Chiangmai, Phuket). There are some good rstaurant in Little Indian if you like Indian food.

If you want to spend time out of Bangkok got Petchaburi/Huahin for the beach visit Summer palace and local seafood market there. Or go to Kanchanaburi visit the World War II museum, stay in a boat/raft hotel or even try white water rafting. If you will be in Chiangmai you have to take a Chiangmai Hot Air Balloon Tour which offer you once in a life time experience. Try Northern Style Dinner(KhanToke Dinner)at Khum Jaw Nang Noi(in Chiangmai),Or visit Doi Tung in Chiang Rai.
