Where is the “Thai” in Phuket?

My wife (who is Thai) and 3 children will visit Thailand for the first time in 12 years. We are planning to spend around 10 days in Phuket, where we have never before been. However, based on information I have gathered on the net during our planning the island seems to be very much oriented to the western tourist. I’m sure there are lots of activities and plenty of fun to be had, but does one really get the feel you are in Thailand? Where are the activities, markets, etc. that are geared more to the locals?

Of course we will visit Bangkok and Chiang Mai and the kids will get some expose to real Thai culture, but it would be nice to have the perspective from someone who knows the island as to what to expect.

Thanks in advance!

True, Phuket is geared to foreign tourists but it is still Thailand. It’s just slightly different to what you will see in Bangkok and it is less crowded and the weather is different as well as the landcape. Just watch out for the motorcycles! They are mad out there!

You will still feel you are in Thailand there. The food is very thai. The lifestyle is still very thai. Just a stroll off the main drag in Patong beach, you will see how the local live.

I highly recommend the Phuket Fantasea show (and YES! that is the correct spelling). Your children will love it. It is in English and the show has something for every age group.

I have been there in 2003 – and is planning to go again soon. Would love to see what it is like now after the tsunami.
