Is it safe to travel to Thailand this summer 2009. Is it safe?

I intend to travel alone to Thailand at the end of June / start of July 2009 for a few weeks as part of a RTW trip, then onto Australia.
The UK foreign office website warns about some recent political demonstrations in Bangkok and Pattaya in April 09, and also ongoing problems in the far South of Thailand.
Therefore even if I have to fly to Bangkok, I will quickly leave for other towns. My friend recommends Ko pha ngang and Ko phi phi near Phuket. Is the south near Phuket safe? ( considering the far south is the most troublesome region and is only a few hours journey away)
What towns / attractions do you recommend that are tourist friendly and relatively safe?

Also aprreciate any other info you have about meeting other travellers along the way, tour groups etc.
