Head down south, go to Phi Phi island and do some scuba diving, or Ko Lanta. Its absolutely beautiful there. There is an active nightlife in Phi Phi island, shops, some nice beachfront restaurants. Go to the Hippi bar or the one next to it which has a french name. You can catch a ferry from Phuket to Phi Phi for about 250 bt one way it takes about 3 hours.
Phuket is just another tourist attraction, crazy place, but is good if you want to relax in a beautiful resort. I would only spend a day or 2 in Phuket.
When you get to the airport (phuket) you can get shuttle buses which are really cheap however you will have to travel all over the island before they take you to your destination – they will stop at a travel agency (to try and entice you to book), and you will have to make a number of stops in different directions for other passengers. If you are jetlagged, catch a taxi.
Also beware, if you catch a tuk tuk and you have your luggage with you, they will most certainly try and drop you off at a hotel or something as they can get comission. Make it clear that you want to go straight to your destination, so they dont alter your itinerary.
rule of thumb – on phuket – never pay more than 1/2 of what someone quotes you on an item.
